Spencer Thew, chief executive officer
of Atlantic Testing Laboratories, Canton, has received the Upstate New York Ernst &
Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for 2004 in the category of technology and technical
services. The award honors those "who inspire others with their vision, leadership
and achievement," When not running a million dollar
engineering firm, Spencer can be found teaching in the Civil & Environmental
Engineering department of Clarkson University.
Spencer applies the same level of dedication to his kennel of Siberian Husky sled
dogs. He is committed to the working/racing qualities of this breed. Although the
Siberian is known for excelling in obedience, conformation and in harness, it is the
latter that he has chosen to focus on. Occasionally he may have an experienced sled
dog looking for a retirement home. Should their dogs not meet the qualifications
you are looking for, or one is not currently available, he will be happy to refer you to
another reputable breeder.
Sled dog race experience includes such events as the Can-Am 60, Can-Am 250, Sandwich
Notch, Bancroft, Eldorado, Wawa, Craftbury, ALPO series in New York, Labrador 400 and the
Iditarod.
Spencer although a quiet, private person by nature, is an advocate for disabled athletes
and finds other such means to reach out philanthropically. He and his wife
Patty are in the process of launching a Bed & Breakfast/Corporate Retreat, complete
with a Mushing 101 curriculum, Dog Sled Touring/Clinics/Rides and
team building exercises.
Depending on their schedule, he is available to give presentations to small school
groups, 4H and other such organizations.
